Position Announcement & Job Description


The mission of the Cultural Council of Cortland County is to encourage, promote and sustain arts and culture in Cortland County in order to enhance and enrich the quality of life. This purpose is accomplished by assuring the availability of a variety of cultural experiences, opportunities and services throughout Cortland County. The Cultural Council of Cortland County is designated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

The Executive Director's primary responsibilities are to develop, manage and promote community arts programs; oversee volunteers; secure grants and other funding; prepare and monitor budgets; increase membership; and act as an advocate for arts in the community. The Executive Director serves at the pleasure of the Board of Directors (Board) and works collaboratively with them. This a part-time position.

Typical Tasks:

Overall administration of all Cultural Council of Cortland County (CCCC) operations and services

Development of the CCCC budget - in conjunction with the Board - and operating within that budget

In conjunction with the Board - plan and produce fund raising programs and events; develop funding strategy; search for funding opportunities; write grant proposals and administer grants

Identify and create opportunities to enhance CCCC's visibility, position and credibility within the community including the use of social media, e-newsletters and advertising

Implementation of approved programs

Maintain a strong relationship with the Board; provide information and prepare monthly reports for the Board; meet monthly with Board and with committees as needed

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of the functions of an arts council

Knowledge of grant writing procedures

Ability to increase community involvement in the arts

Ability to develop a volunteer base and to coordinate volunteers in support of programs

Ability to grow membership

Knowledge of budgetary concepts and ability to prepare and manage budgets

Ability to work collaboratively with the Board

Ability to communicate effectively in both written and spoken word

Ability to effectively use word processing and spreadsheet software as well as photo editing software

Desirable Qualifications:

Degree from an accredited 4-year college/university with a strong preference for candidates with a Degree in Arts Management, Business or Nonprofit management, or an Arts field (such as music, theater, dance, visual/digital arts)

Minimum of two years' experience with a non-profit organization

Leadership ability and initiative

Knowledge of, passion for, and commitment to the arts

Budget development, management, fundraising and grant writing experience 

Ability to form partnerships

Knowledge of the community

Organizational and administrative skills

Experience working with QuickBooks, PhotoShop, and Constant Contact
